Summary:

This is a story about about a little girl in the south named Sarny. Sarny is a slaved on a farm when another slave is bought whos name is Nightjohn. He agrees that he will teach her to read and write in exchange for tobacco. Eventually John runs away, and when sarny is Just losing hope John takes her away to a secret school where he teaches tons of slave children to read and write.

1. Write about a time you sacrified something for someone include your reasoning and feelings?

One day i was in my house and my sister to she told me thyat she wasent gonna go to school and i asked her why? she told me because she was going to see her boyfriend so i went to school and when my parents came they asked me if she went to school and i told them yeah i sacrified for her just to tell them that she did when to school.


2. Pretend that you are John or Sarny write a journal entry about a day in the plantation.

Dear journal, everyday i wake up in the mourning just to go to work in the farm im a one of the slaves im always tired, i wish i could rest for a little while.

3. Characters: Sarny, Nightjohn and Mammy

Sarny: Shes a twelve year old. Sarny is a quiet girl, she is always thinking, she finds that learning to read and write is the best way to can contribute to her own freedom and to her people's liberation comes easily. She knew the things that would get her into trouble and tried her best not to do them.

Nightjohn: Is a slave with a little knowledge of read and write. And he never keep the knowledge just to him. He started to teach young slaves how to read and write, things were not always going right. His master, Waller, found out everything , and punished him by whiping him and cut his toe off.

Mammy: Is the one who takes care of the children


Waller: He's a white reach man and a cruel person.


Setting: In a farm

Rising action: The rising action is when Waller found sarny writing in the dirt.

Falling action: The falling action is when Nightjohn leave the farm and then he come back to teach
